I have been fascinated by angels since middle school - basically since my world was rocked and turned upside down by my dad's death and I began to really read the Bible for myself.
I remember two times as a child where I saw angels. If you're reading this, you may think I'm crazy, but I vividly remember falling off my bike while riding down a steep hill and being surrounded by soft white as I was let down gently onto the pavement. I still had scrapes and bruises, but I didn't feel a thing.
The second time was after my dad died. I had horrific, vivid nightmares for about 5 years that were so terrifying during the night and would plague me during the day. I was in bondage to those nightmares. One night, I felt like I was being haunted by all the twisted things happening in my nightmare, and suddenly my room was full of an army of angels.
Each one looked like the other. Each one carried a spear in his right hand. They looked Asian/European and all were men with close-cropped hair and beards. They had firm expressions on their faces and stared straight in front of them. There was one next to my pillow, and several that surrounded my bed, the dresser, my sister's bed (we shared a room), the window, the large mirror in our room, and the door. They filled the room and I felt safe. Not long after that I stopped having the nightmares.
I told my math tutor and friend about it the next day and she said, "well that's good that you saw that they were male, because there aren't female angels". Which is true.
I love this verse: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven" Matt. 18:10.
Even though I believe it, it still seems weird in our American, push-God-into-the-back-of-everything mentality that every single child is protected by one of His angles. However, Matthew isn't the only place we can be reminded that little children have angels. In psalms 91:11, it says, "For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways".
From what I understand, every single child is guarded and protected by these angels for a reason. This is comforting to me when I think of all the children abused and neglected, unwanted and forgotten. The precious savior has not forgotten them!
The whole reason I wrote this post was because in the mornings I've been noticing Adrian wanting to climb to see above the back of the couch and look towards our front door. He will then smile and start dancing at whatever/whomever he sees there. This made me think of a precious familiy I used to babysit. The youngest had a form of Downs Syndrome and his mom once told me that she would notice him smiling at nothing in particular and she thought it was "his angel". It's been ten years since I used to work for them and I still remember that.
I think Adrian is beginning to notice His angel.
Adults reading these, I want also to remind you that we may have contact with angels as well! I'm pretty sure adults don't have guardian angels just for each of them, but Hebrews 13:2 says, "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it".
I hope that encouaged you today!
"Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?"
Hebrews 1:14
